INTERVIEW WITH NIKHAT SHEIKH

Illustrator, educator & entrepreneur

Hello Nikhat and welcome,

We are certainly very happy to have you with us.

Hello Nikhat and welcome,

We are certainly very happy to have you with us.

We discovered your profile while we were launching our last edition of The Creative Bundle and fell in love with your illustrations.

Let’s talk a little about your work, what made you choose illustrating as your way of life?

I enjoyed sketching and painting from my very early school days, but it was something I wanted to pursue professionally was what I learned in my college days after seeing multiple different career options. I was a management student but my mind was always stuck in creating art. It started feeling like a pressure to do one thing and wish for something else, so while I was in my 2nd year of graduation I started looking for different opportunities as an artist. And till now this journey is full for so much excitement and new experiences for me.

Now I offer different workshops and courses to make the life of other beginner artists easier and I now help them to achieve their dreams of being full time artists. 🙂

¿How did you take the first step in order to start teaching? Was it something that just occurred to you and as people started to order, you grew more confident about it? Tell us a little about your change.

I can say when Pandemic hit in 2019, That’s when I saw my real ability to flourish as an artist. By 2020 I gained confidence to host my first online workshop but being an introverted person back then it was too hard for me to come out of my zone and teach, especially online. After that first workshop I never took another workshop for at least a year. Later I started getting tons of requests for guidance and that’s when I learned that beginners who are just starting out need me and if I want to help I should come out of my comfort zone and now I host workshops around every month. I have taught over 1000 students this year and it still makes me wonder when I go back and see myself from 2019.

You are an incredible businesswoman! On top of your classes and courses, you also offer the most beautiful paper goods with your illustrations. The truth be told, all your illustrations are unique, if we were to choose only one, the task would be too hard.

¿What would you recommend to an artist that wishes to start teaching on the internet?

Thank you so much for loving my efforts. If I have to say something to the new artists who want to teach I’d say go for it. This world need more artists and the society we live in are all aware of what a Social Media is, What Fashion Designing is but they don’t know what Surface Pattern Designing is. They might have never heard about this term before. So slide in and educate the endless possibilities of starting as a commercial artist and building a whole career as a Surface Pattern Designer.

Let ‘s talk about your more personal side. We will admit, we fell in love with your trip the moment you shared your car ‘s transformation. But, as not everyone reading might know your story,  feel free to explain it again with all.

Where do you get most inspired?

Haha! I actually started travelling more after from last year only, When I started my own stationary brand I felt very restricted about doing my market research just by being home in a very small town. I always loved travelling but never got the chance to travel more often. Last year I made a promise that I’ll travel every 2-3 months to explore the world, to get inspired and to make connections. I started this year by getting a new car and took it to the mountains of Jim Corbett, Uttarakhand, India and after 2-3 months Transformed my car and converted it into a camper to spend a whole month in Kashmir and Ladakh, India and now as I write these answers I’m enjoying this beautiful sound of rain in this beautiful place called Ooty situated in Southern part of India. In short I get more creative when I travel and see places.

If, just like us, you want to know a little bit more or wish to travel to the wonderful places Nikhat transports you through her work, do not hesitate to check her profile @nikhatstories, it is filled with pictures and illustrations of the most beautiful places.

Let us know a little bit more regarding your trips

My trips are usually random. I pick places that I ever wished to visit and I plan a budget trip to visit that place. I start with creating a calendar and divide the dates in Day and night columns which helps me to plan my travel in a very detailed format.

The most beautiful place that I visited so far is Kashmir, India without a doubt, But this very small village in Rumbak, Ladakh has left a very calming impression in my mind. I stayed with a local family there and their lifestyle made me think about how a life can be lived in a very peaceful way without internet and social media. It was also a place where I learned how it is like to have a 100% eco-friendly lifestyle.

In order to conclude the interview…You have already participated in one of our bundles as an affiliate. What has this experience brought to you? What would you tell a person who wishes to participate?

I remember when we were promoting this creative bundle, I was on a vacation in Goa but since the content of this course and artists who have participated in this course we already the best in their field, I never had to put a lot of pressure in it’s marketing. I only promoted this bundle to my Email list and on a few IG stories and it got converted.  But apart from the marketing stuffs I really loved the amount of efforts the creative bundle team has put through in educating us about the bundle and helped us with different strategies to market the product was very appreciable. 🙂 I would love to be a part of this again if I get a chance.
